A few months ago, when Karan Johar announced the release date of STUDENT OF THE YEAR, a section of the distributors' fraternity was of the opinion that Karan was committing a grave mistake by releasing the film during Navratri festivities. "The evening and night shows will take a beating" ... "Why is Karan hell-bent on ruining the prospects of his film and the three newcomers?" ... "Can't Karan reschedule STUDENT OF THE YEAR after Diwali?"
But fortune favors the brave, they say. It's a known fact that film business takes a dip during Navratri festivities, but it has also been established that a good film can withstand any opponent. Notwithstanding the [marginal] dip in the evening/night shows, the fact remains that STUDENT OF THE YEAR has packed a rock-solid punch its opening weekend. In fact, it's a new record for a film starring new faces. First AGNEEPATH, then EK MAIN AUR EKK TU, now STUDENT OF THE YEAR... Karan has dabbled with diverse genres this year and as luck would have it, the three films have passed the litmus test at the box-office.
The business of STUDENT OF THE YEAR is sure to get a boost on Wednesday [Dashehra] and Friday [Bakra Eid]. The film has passed the test and so has Karan Johar. He has proved, in very clear terms, he's the Pied Piper amongst film-makers. Luring the audience [in hordes] to cineplexes on the sheer strength of his name alone. No small achievement, this!
The other release, DELHI SAFARI, went completely unnoticed, sidelined by the STUDENT OF THE YEAR wave at the BO.
